I was standing in line at the counter in St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands when I suddenly felt something kind of funny. I was about to return the car and I remembered that when I booked it I only paid 1 dollar at the start. I am from the US and I flew there for a trip. I think it was the night of March 7 when I was in my hotel scrolling on my phone. I saw a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited from Budget on QEEQ. It had four doors and five seats. I started to imagine driving it along the coast in St Thomas with the sea on the side and the wind blowing. I really wanted it. Then I looked at the total price and I felt a bit nervous because my credit card limit was not very high at that time and I did not want to push it all at once. On the page I saw this payment option called One-Dollar Freeze. I even talked to myself and said “Only one dollar is this real”. I checked the intro. It said I only pay 1 dollar first as a booking fee and the rest will be charged automatically before the rental starts and there is no interest. I thought that was nice. So I decided to lock this car first and if something went wrong later I could still change my plan. When I placed the booking it felt very easy. My phone showed a charge of just 1 dollar. I even opened my card bill to check if there were any strange extra charges. There were none. I joked with my friend and said “Look I used one dollar to hold a Jeep in St Thomas”. He did not really believe me and asked if I would be charged a lot later. I said I was also a bit worried but I would just keep an eye on it. On March 8 around noon when it was time to pick up the car I checked my credit card app after breakfast. I saw the rest of the rental cost was charged already and the amount was exactly the same as the price I saw when I booked. There were no extra random items. I felt very calm then. My card did not feel overloaded and I could still use my money for other things in the days before the trip. When I arrived at St Thomas airport I pulled my suitcase to the Budget counter and showed my voucher to the staff at the desk. He checked it and said the prepayment was all set and I just needed to sign the rental form. In my head I thought it was really good that I used One-Dollar Freeze. If I had to pay the full amount on the first day I booked I might not dare to choose this Jeep. For an overseas traveler like me this way of paying 1 dollar first and locking the car feels very relaxed. I do not have big pressure on my credit card at the beginning. From the booking to driving the Jeep around the island in St Thomas and then returning it the payment part did not give me any trouble. It just worked in the background and that fits me well because I need to plan my budget quite carefully.
